Impounded cars as drivers conned by fraudsters
Car Insurance policies are the latest targets that fraudsters have been counter fitting. In the latest police raids in England, 27 suspects have been arrested for issuing ‘fake’ car insurance policies. Fraudsters have been targeting high risk drivers, foreign drivers and those facing expensive premiums such as impounded car insurance premiums that are shopping for bargains.
Fraudsters masquerading as ghost companies have been found to use small adverts and websites to sell these ‘fake’ car insurance policies, there have also been reports of people being approached in restaurants, university campuses and internet cafes by fraudsters.
These ghost companies / brokers have been issuing insurance policies that have been totally made up in most cases, and in others are real policies that have had false information supplied so as to lower the price of the car insurance policy. Using such policies will still result in cars being impounded by the police, and possibly criminal prosecution.
Police have made arrests in Manchester, London, Leicester and Birmingham. However new ghost companies could still spring up, so driver diligence is most important to prevent them from being conned. A worrying fact is that the victims of these fraudsters using such ‘fake’ policies are least likely to manage financially in the event of being part of an accident and insurance companies not paying out.
